On The Air!

Join me each Sunday afternoon, 2:00-4:00pm ET, on 630 WMAL - AM, Washington, DC's premier News/Talk Station.  (Streaming audio is available from WMAL's site -- and my show is now available, 4 Sundays at a time, for download and podcasting "On Demand.")

Sunday, October 30, 2005

We'll discuss tonight a wealth of material in a few short hours:

-- Should President Bush and Vice President Cheney apologize to the country for the actions of their aids in the CIA Leak investigation?

-- With the elimination of Harriet Miers' nomination to the Supreme Court, has the Christian right so taken control of the Republican Party that it's in danger of becoming nothing more than a tool of fanatics?

-- Does it matter that we've now passed the 2,000 mark of American troops killed in Iraq?  (Actually, as of today, it's 2,016 -- but who's counting?)

-- With the announcement of obscene profits in the last quarter by Big Oil while we've all been paying through our teeth at the gas pumps, is it time to force them to give some of it back?

All that and more. Join me.

Okay, it's time for me to have my say on the illegal immigration issue -- specifically the plans to have a Herndon, Va. version of the Minutemen.  Put simply:  From a distance, how do you tell a legal immigrant who's just trying to find a job from an illegal one?

And -- Why won't American Forces Radio put liberal Ed Schultz on the air for our troops to hear a different point of view?

Plus:  Are you ready for the indictments coming this week in the CIA leak investigation?

It will be a lively two hours -- join me.

Everywhere I've turned today in planning for tonight's show, I've been slapped in the face by the continuing conflicts all over the world involving the role religion should play in public policy and laws.  The Iraqi Constitution appears to have been ratified, naming Islam as the official religion of the state, saying all laws must conform to Islam.  Is this what you wanted?

And here at home, the marching band at Hylton High School in Prince William County has been told by its director that it can't play "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, because one man -- who home-schools his kids -- wrote a letter complaining that the band shouldn't be allowed to play a song mentioning the devil if it can't mention God.  Sheesh.

In the Harriet Miers case, the White House seems to be backing off its earlier strategy this week of touting Miers' evangelical Christianity as a reason conservatives should support her.  Is this a proper use of religion in selecting Supreme Court Justices?

Meanwhile, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has ordered a stay in a case in which an imprisoned woman in Missouri can't get an abortion -- because the state doesn't allow funds to be spent to facilitate abortions.  In this case, she'd have to be transported at the state's expense.  Should this woman be forced to have the child she obviously doesn't want?

We'll talk about all this, and more -- including the pending indictments of Karl Rove, Scooter Libby (and Dick Cheney?) in the Valerie Plame case.  Join me -- it will be a lively two hours.

God bless Senator John McCain.  At least someone has the courage to do the right thing:  This week McCain got the Senate to pass, by a 90-9 vote, an amendment to the military spending bill outlawing the use of torture.  We'll talk about why it took so long to get to this, along with questions about President Bush's choice for the Supreme Court, Harriet Miers; whether or not the Supreme Court should uphold an Oregon law twice passed by the voters to allow physician-assisted suicide -- and much more.

Bill Bennett, the conservative Republican self-annointed icon of moral virtues, said on his show this past week, "You could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down."  (Yes, I know this is just part of the quote!)  Here's my promise to you:  Tonight you'll hear this discussed in a manner you haven't heard anywhere else.  And that's just the beginning of the show!
